24 February 2016 – On 15 September 2015, the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) published the first edition of SPE-890, a Guideline for Accountable Management of End-of-Life Materials. The first-of-its-kind Guideline aims to help organizations make more effective and informed decisions by establishing a common set of definitions, performance metrics, and reporting requirements for current and prospective service providers with responsibilities for ensuring proper management of EOL materials.
CM Consulting is proud to have played a key role in the development of SPE-890, which is the culmination of a rigorous process involving a multidisciplinary group of experts, industry, and government stakeholders. The project began in 2013, with CM Consulting (working with OWMA) drafting a seed document through a series of interviews with Ontario processors to identify key issues and elements needed in a guideline. Through a series of consultations, the document was refined to focus on five key elements:
- clear and consistent definitions
- sustainable materials management hierarchy
- consistent and meaningful materials tracking and reporting
- calculation of performance rates; and
- data verification audits
